Ghost Reveries inspired me to investigate further Opeth, and I've discovered I really like this.

I dislike Blackwater Park. So far, it's my least favorite Opeth album.

I'm amazed you guys think that, to be honest. I personally think it is still Opeth's finest hour.

Maybe I would think differently if I listened to it again, but when I heard it a while back I was so incredibly bored and annoyed with it that I couldn't stand to listen to it. It's the only Opeth album to do that to me so far.

Blackwater Park is rather far down the Opeth album list for me. Just something about it. Still Life owns their discography. This Message Edited On 10.13.05

As far as I'm concerned, the inclusion of Bleak on Blackwater Park makes it better than this album, and Still Life. Ghost Reveries is the only Opeth album to rival BP in my opinion.

Ghost Reveries, I think, is the bottom of the Opeth line for me.
Morningrise is just pure ownage, so it gets towards the top just on awesomeness. But still, Still Life is where it's at. This Message Edited On 10.13.05

You have to admit that vocals are a huge part of the Opeth sound. Morningrise has some of Akerfeldt's worst vocals, and the clean vocals on Still Life leave something to be desired.
However, he really hit his stride on Blackwater Park. He almost never sings out of key (save intro to Dirge), and his growls are as thick as ever. Some of the instrumentation on Still Life is better than BWP, but the production values plus the amazing vocal work put it over the top for me.
Ghost Reveries is definitely not their best, though.

The vocals is why I can't call Morningrise their best. I feel the songwriting in Still Life is far superior to BP, and I'd say the clean vocals are better too. Growls are very debatable.
Plus SL has Face of Melinda, and that owns Bleak every day of the week.

Damnation is my fav. Blackwater park is definatly good though. Deliverence is their worst. All of them are great though.

Ghost Reveries, bad? Never!
It's strange that Opeth fans seem to be divided into two camps - newer stuff and old stuff. I don't like the vocals on their earlier work - Mikael's lower growls sound better to me, as opposed to the raspy kind of thing he had going. Ghost Reveries to me is a very nice blend of bone-crunching heaviness, beautiful clean sections, and a touch of prog wankery.

I actually dislike Damnnation. The songwriting is pretty dry IMO, and the songs aren't very diverse. Also on a couple songs Akerfeldt hits some bum notes.
