I don't mind this album but the production is a little too convoluted for my liking- plus it was written after ITNE, so I was hoping it would be a little better. Furthermore, the keyboard sounds (especially the 'orchestral score') can only be compared to a MIDI soundtrack. Extremely disappointing.
I believe a lot of the atmosphere from ITNE came from the unnatural sounding choirs, the strings- the timbre of all the keyboard work in that album just seemed to have the right balance of believability and surrealism.
But frankly when I listen to this albums keyboard work, especially when they try to put in the 'brass' instruments, it sounds like the soundtrack for an Atari game or something. . . Or maybe I'm thinking of Borgir's "Sorgens Kammer" ;)
Either way, there was a LOT I liked about this album, but similarly, a lot that I simply couldn't forgive. I'm hoping it will grow on me a little; but for now, it's going to be rated at 3.5.

This sucker is deep and complex - a new listen every time - however - am I the only one who wishes they would go back and remix it so you could actually hear the vocals? they are so back mixed it is ridiculous - it has always bothered me and will always bump this sucker way below Nightside, regardless of the writing on it.
Nightside definitely has more "hooks" on it... this album sounds a bit "washed out" at times...
