I think I know the problem.

the riffs are varied... extremely varied. Unlike bands like Darkthrone and Burzum, Enslaved do not repeat the same atmospheric riff over and over again for the entire song. Rather, they switch it up a lot.

It still has pretty much everything else though. the atmosphere, the vocal work... its black metal... but hardly raw black metal.

I hate being a genre fag though. Whatever you think is fine. I firmly believe this is black metal though.

Exactly. The influence is there but they offer so much more.

Yeah this is definitely black metal. Its also Enslaved's second best album. Vertebrae is the best.

People are only 'crazy' from the outside, but from the inside, it's really quite a beautiful thing

With the exception to Ice Dale, Enslaved are some of the ugliest mother fuckers i've ever seen in metal. I'm going to find this pronto although lamenting the fact this is pre Arve Enslaved.

They're totally different albums, its hard to compare in terms of genre relation.

Oh yeah, definitely.

But in terms of enjoyment, i think I prefer this keyboard heavy BM sound than their sound in Isa. Well, at the moment at least...

Might have to check that out then. I never hear about that album, it's always either this, Isa or Vertebrae

Vertebrae is my favorite. Either this or Ruun comes after that. I don't like Isa as much as a lot of people around here do.

Very atmospheric album, but this is their 3rd best after Below The Lights and Blodhemn.
