When I first heard St. Anger on TV as a child it was the heaviest shit I had ever heard.

It actually is, it's the closest thing metallica did that sounded like nu-metal.
But here's a conclusion I arrived to, after listening a lot of bands: guitar solos are sometimes overrated, yeah sometimes there are necessary and it works but some songs doesn't need it.
I hate metalheads who criticize that metal bands which never make guitar solos are not real metal bands.

I think the lack of solos is the least of the criticisms levelled at this album. For the record, I actually enjoy the drums on this even though it's kind of a trainwreck

I feel like once every single lyric on an album becomes a meme, it's maybe no longer bad but rather ahead of its time.

There are 2 ways of make a double concept album, one is the fragile by NIN, the other is metallica's lulu.

There's a limited number of songs that had potential (Frantic, St. Anger, maybe The Unnamed Feeling), but in sum you'd be hard-pressed to find an album with lazier songwriting, honestly.
Look no further than "Some Kind of Monster" clocking in at a painful 8 and a half minutes of the same bland, refraining riffs.
