Probably my second favourite EP ever tbh. First track I always skip but literally all the songs that come after it are perfect, especially Drive it.

yeah, the t/t is definitely the worst. otherwise, its a brilliant prelude to the magic of Loveless that stands on its own as an excellent collection of songs.

out of interest, whats your fave ep?

Yeah. honestly this is pretty close to Loveless, just kinda lacks the awe-inspiring massiveness of it. You can definitely hear how they were headed in that direction though, and at times I think the songwriting on here outshines Loveless by a hair. Not production wise though, definitely not.

And mine is Humanity is the Devil by Integrity, one of my all time favourite bands (their debut is tied for my all time favourite album). It's ten minutes of pure, unrelenting misanthropic energy. Plus guitar solos! Check 'em out if you ever wanna blow off some steam.

Exactly, even though Loveless was the sound of Shields ascending to the level of creative zenith that few songwriters ever reach, he was backed by a seemingly infinite budget to allow him to reach that immaculate guitar tone. Such a band, working my way through the rest of their discog atm. Been almost exclusively gazing all week, so many gems in this genre.

Aight man I'll give Those Who Fear Tomorrow a d/l (incidentally, that has to be one of the greatest album titles ever).

Hell yeah, I hope you enjoy it. I know you're not that into metal but the sheer in it (and stellar musicianship/riffage) is enough for anyone to dig I think.

And the pure amount of perfectly executed ambition of Loveless is what puts it over the top. Kevin poured his heart and soul (as well as tons of moolah, as you stated) into the production of that record to make something truly outstanding, original that would stand the test of time.

I love shoegaze, seriously some of the chillest music ever made by man. You hear Whirr's Distressor EP yet? It's pretty damn solid. Cocteau Twins and The Jesus and Mary Chain. are worth checking too if you wanna hear the style's origins. Nothing is quite Loveless level though... not even Nothing huehuehue ah shoot me

After I'm done gazing I'm gonna try give some metal a proper shot, thinking Bath, some Cult of Luna, maybe some Opeth and Jane Doe. Are they terrible starter albums or?

I'm just completely obsessed with Loveless atm man, no man has a right to be able to make those sounds. With a guitar, no less! No wonder Kevin went crazy trying to top it.

Haven't heard any of those actually, although I have Treasure by Cocteau Twins downloaded and ready to go. Forgive my ignorance, but who is Nothing by?

I always have a hard time choosing between this and Tremolo, they're both near perfect

Nothing's a new shoegaze band, just released an album called Guilty of Everything. Haven't listened yet but it's been getting good reviews.

As for intros to heavier music.. I'd say Bath is a good pick for your tastes, but maybe throw in these:

Deftones - White Pony
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Converge - You Fail Me (cause JD is just soo batshit it can be hard for outsiders to get into - not to condescend of course)
Opeth - Still Life
Death - Symbolic
Ulver - Bergtatt
Baroness - Blue Record
Strapping Young Lad - City

All excellent albums and a good introduction to different styles in metal. Heavy stuff but not too inaccessible and pretty easy to get into if you're open-minded and simply like things with evocative atmospheres and just plain good songwriting.

avon, check Mastodon - Leviathan as well, since a sludge metal/prog hybrid is not too far from shoegaze; plus, you're a prog fan as well.

Also, you must hear Queensryche: Operation Mindcrime at least once before death, it's that good. It's Floyd influenced and not too heavy so it should suit your taste.
