Okay, here's the whole outtake of that interview as quoted on wiki:

"Sometimes the lyrics come easily, other times I have to work quite hard. When I’m starting off actually singing on a song and I’ve never heard it before, I just do a whole take of gibberish. Just kind of mumbling fake words - because what’s more important is the intent of the feeling that you get with the melody, and if it’s the right one.

It shouldn’t really be that important what the word is, so later I’ll try and fit words to the gibberish I did, because I think the gibberish is a lot more honest than the words - so I’m just trying to put clothes onto something that’s naked. It’s easier to just put clothes onto something that’s naked and just say ‘Yeah, that’s what I meant’, when everyone else seems to come up with a better interpretation than what I intended.

"And sometimes some of that gibberish is retained in the final product. There’s a lot of the stuff on ‘Tetragrammaton’ that Omar didn’t want me to repeat because he just liked the first scratch take of it. Some of it I cringe at, because it sounds so rough and scratch, and I’m really all over the place as far as hitting the right notes. So sometimes we’ll go in and alter it later in mixing with some effects that’ll kind of hide that, or amplify it even more and make it seem like an intentional fuck-up. Sometimes we believe in the creed that you should honour your mistakes as hidden intentions!"

Look, I don't mind nonsensical lyrics at all, but it bugs me that they are thrown at me with this level of pretense. I'd have a lot more respect for Cedric if he owned up that his stuff here doesn't really mean anything and employed a bit of self-mockery.

So "progressive" as a genre isn't such if you only play well, instead of making a major breakthrough?

Exactly. Lots of people can play well. What makes Mars Volta special is the hook-filled band efforts, as shown on a bunch of tracks on De-loused, Frances the mute's L'via l'viaquez, and on this album in the instances I noted. Again, the PRETENSE is that the music is progressive, while a lot of the time they are just standing still and lazily show off what we already knew they were technically capable of.

I always thought people defined liking albums by how enjoyable it was...strange then, because then most bands out there deserves a 1.5...like all the beatles albums, or megadeth, or The bends by Radiohead.

This review is well written, but horribly concieved trash

I don't see how this makes any sense. How did you think I defined it and why would that amount to low scores for the albums you mentioned?

If you know spanish and enjoy latin music to any degree L'Via is an absolutely ridiculous song. Tapers at the end but you cant hate it.

I actually really enjoy listening to this album. It's almost math-jazz or something crazy. Day of the Baphomets makes me cream.

Easily TMV's worst record to date. It's just kinda lifeless and unlistenable at times, although Day Of The Baphomets is good. The Bedlam In Goliath is kinda what this album should have been IMO.

^^^^Hahahaha I didn't even notice that.

This album was a big letdown, especially it being the follow up to Frances, but no where close to a 1.5.

Mars expects us to take them seriously but you really can't.. In saying that i do enjoy their music in small doses.

Oh and your review is pretty good but a lil short.

Good review, I really tried to like this, because Im usually the guy who likes all the stuff everyone else finds boring. But give me a break, Im not sure what some of you hear in this album. Its basically a bunch of nonsense, a couple minutes of good music, but spread out into long tracks of sound effects. Sorry, probably wont be listening to this much more. Frances the Mute was good, deloused was good. Not a fan of this.

Iluvatar, I swear you must have said that L'Via L'Viaquez thing to be revisionist and go against the grain.
