The Poet and the Pendulum is still their best song though ;)

I agree. i Really enjoy Annete's vocal performance on that song. I'm still curious to hear how Tarja would have fared on it, something tells me it wouldn't have fit at all with her colder tone.

Tarja would've been superb at the beginning for the soprano parts that the little boy did, but I would want to see how she'd do with the huge chorus.

The more I listen to this, the more I've come to decide that Anette is a better fit for the new direction the band is going in.

Tarja had that cold, distant tone that worked well on early releases, but one thing that always bugged me about Once and I only recently figured out was that her voice just wasn't on the same page as the music. So in a way, the proverbial changing of the guard was for the better.

wow i looked back on my comment on the first page before i really got into Nightwish. man i was dumb. this album is pretty good, ive been listening to The Poet and the Pendulum a lot lately, but the rest of the album is just a bunch of mediocre songs. the vocals get annoying sometimes. i wish i wasnt an idiot and got to see them live before Tarja left. now its just a long lost dream

^^WOW hahaha. Love how they thought to double-team for the layered studio effect. Or whatever you call it.This Message Edited On 06.19.08

If Tarja was still on board, they would have approached the album differently. Fuck Annette until she loses her voice.

I loved Tarja's vocal style. Maybe because I got so used to her singing. I found it beautiful and haunting at the same time. Listening to Annette for over a year now, I love her voice as well. Two totally different styles of vocalist and Annette doesn't make Nightwish any better or any worse. I would've just loved to see Tarja sing with the production that was put out on this disc. THe musicianship and orchestration are the best I've heard.

I think Tarja might have done better on some of the songs that I feel need a stronger vocal approach (i.e. Whoever Brings the Night, Cadence of her Last Breath, 7 Days to the Wolves). Maybe even Sahara, though I can enjoy Annette in that song just as well. Annette has a decent enough voice, but sometimes it's a bit too soft/sweet for what the orchestration or (certain) lyrics require. Tarja just has such a commanding voice, even when she uses her softer tones.

eh, I think she started to emphasize too much. in her mind it's like she was the show and she would milk it for what it's worth

ok, I know I will be flamed for this, especially me being a new member, but here goes.

Tarja was NOT a good vocalist. Along with being a prissy diva bitch for the majority of her career with Nightwish, she was holding them back musically, due to the fact that she could be considered a mediocre opera singer at best.

If any of yall are vocalists, you know what I mean. Her complete lack of any substantial technique was painful to listen to at times, and she was even worse live. I will give yall this though, Annette is not much better. But, IMO, she IS better.

Well, I didn't like Tarja because I don't like the whole opera singing shit, I don't get anything from it. Wheras with Annette I do, I feel her emotion (and the stuff is alot harder thanks to her).

Deprevivedyourselfofinnocence, fuck off. Mediocre, opera singer? Sir i'm going to maim you. Tarja is what made the band unique. her vocals easily stood out from the rest of female fronted metal bands, filled with powr and emotion. Listen to Walking In The Air. Whatever though, her solo album is doing pretty good commercially, although not as strong as Nightwish still excellent vocally. Annette as a singer, is mediocre at best but I guess she sounds good on a few tracks. I hate her image though and would hate to see her screech through an hours set.

Nah not really. The only thing that has on this is the female vocals. Marco is better than their male vocalist and there is no way in hell the orchestration and instrumentation is better.
