LOL Shattered Future, so you decided to review this anyways since it isn't out in the U.S.

Hey, if the rest of them aren't getting deleted, why should mine be any different? I really don't understand this forum sometimes...

BF, you should get Once first if you like music like this. Once is a much better album that's not bogged down too much by bad tracks.

I like the new singer but the band lost plenty in their uniqueness.

Once and Oceanborn to start with. Then Wishmaster and Century Child. Perhaps this when you're really bored.

I still think Nightwish has a sound that no one else does, but they are certainly starting to shift towards what the rest of the scene sounds like.

The rest of the scene uses a Full Orchestra??? They incorporate Irish and gospel styles into their songs?? They start off an album with a 14 minute epic monster??

I think people say that Nightwish is failing because we expect so much from them and they flat out destroy the competition. When they try something new that we haven't heard before, we are very skeptical...That is just my view on it though.

I just listened to Poet anbd the Pendulum on youtube, and was blown away. Fantastic, i've never heard anything else by Nightwish. I think i'll get this when it comes out in the U.S.

No, Poet, I think you're just letting your fanboyism get the best of you. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the biggest Nightwish fanboys ever, but I can find fault with this album. Tuomas's compositions always had a bit of originality to them, even when they started shifting towards symphonic metal, and it kept them from falling into that "film scoring" sound that infects so many bands. On the other hand, this album falls into that rut; not completely, but enough to ruin it.

And the gospel style should NOT have been in there at all.

I am not saying this album is perfect...not at all. Songs like Cadence of her Last Breath, Eva, and 7 Days to the Wolves are just blah to me.

Three songs make this whole album worthwhile to me; The Poet and the Pendulum, Last of the Wilds, and The Islander. I have never heard anything like them before, and I would pay money just to have those three songs. But this is coming from someone whose first Nightwish album was Once (I got it a month before Tarja got fired) and I went backwards, instead of forwards, so the orchestral parts were always my favorite. That is why I lean more towards the new albums because I am an overall fan of orchestral work in metal, so the "film" score part of it makes it more outstanding for me.

I think Nightwish wanted to show that they could make a quality album without Tarja, and I guess they have done that since it's already gone like Double Platinum in Finland already.

I guess it's just a clash of opinions in here on how good this album is.

Platinum in Finland is like 30,000 copies though. It's not like the US...

Meh, I was just disappointed. I expected more.

Ok, now I am anxious to find out what you really did expect Shattered Future??

Because I am just baffled right now, and it's a strange weird feeling that I can't describe, lol.

Perhaps I expected too much. I don't know if I like Tarjaless Nightwish.

Uhhhh.

You gave it a 4.5. Giving an album a 4.5 means the album is (around) a noticeable flaw or two away from being perfect.

Having flaws makes it not perfect, hmm?

Perfect: "being complete of its kind and without defect or blemish"

But yeah, that can't really be applied to albums cos perfection is pretty hard to come upon and in music, is largely based on opinion.

A 4.5, to me at least, is an album that doesn't get tiring, is not repetetive, and shows a high level of both lyricism and musicianship.

A 5 is those same qualities but with some other contributing factor that makes it the masterpiece I've rated it to be.

So yeah.

Saying he doesn't rate this anywhere near perfect, only three songs really stand out to him, yet he's given it a 4.5, is a bit silly in my honest and humble opinion.

I expected music that doesn't sound like a Within Temptation clone a good portion of the time. I expected an expanded version of Once. Instead, I got this, which has occasional moments of greatness but is eclipsed by its mediocrity.
