I do like it for sure. It's a very high 3 and probably a 3.5 next time I listen to it. But as is often the case for me, I haven't been as compelled to listen to it as other albums in the past, so I haven't developed much of a connection with it. I think a lot of my 3 ratings are actually a casualty of there just being so much music out there to listen to, that sometimes I don't really have the time to give an album the chance it deserves. A rating of 3 is kind of my go-to default rating for "I know that this is a good album but it's not yet reached the stage of full immersion". Also my general difficulty with rating things makes me sometimes over-think my ratings which can bring about a fairly large "error bar". And since 3 is "good", it means a lot of albums that I genuinely enjoy listening to will sit at a 3, without much of a real tangible difference between what I have at 3 and what I have at 4 or 4.5. Often it just depends on the day I last listened to it and the mood I was in or the time of day it was, do you know what I mean?
Also, let's not forget that kascetcadettt is a cool guy.

I get you minty, I've got a few 3s and 3.5s like that.
Initially I had this at a 3/3.5 in my head after not really 'getting it'; the lyrics went over my head and it wasn't the most careful listen. Gave it a few more attentive listens with the lyrics in front of me and it really got to me. Also really interesting reading up on the recording of the last track and how McMahan was apparently drenched in sweat and vomited. And then of course he checked himself into hospital after the record was finished. Kinda nuts.

That's crazy stuff. I love interesting facts like that about music so thanks for the insight. It reminds me of when I saw Mono play live, and then two years later I read about how the guitarist was so depressed that he would vomited before going on stage at some of their gigs (and I think gig that I went to, specifically). Gave a bit of a deeper meaning to my memories of seeing the band live.

No problem. Huh, thats pretty interesting also. I do wonder when I go to a show whats going through the band member's minds sometimes. Saw Zebrahead once supporting some band, they were super energetic except for the singer who looked like he really didn't want to be there, looked pretty pissed for some reason and kept glaring at his band mates as they were jumping around the stage and knocking into him occasionally. Made for a weird show.

This is post rock
|
| |
Simon Reynolds wouldn't agree that this is post-rock but then again he is so freaking precious of that term that he would probably only categorise like 4 or 5 bands as post-rock. I mean, he even doesn't think Talk Talk are post-rock despite that they have a very similar approach to Bark Psychosis (his post-rock golden child).
