| Summary: The album is not a masterpiece but it's also not, by any means, terrible. It's just an average album. It would be better if they didn't try to experiment this much and get back to basics. |
Ok, I just want to get a couple things straight before we get started:
1.- English is NOT my mothertongue so you can expect some mistakes once in a while.
2.- This is my first review, and critics are welcome. Any of them.
Questions? Anyone? No?, then let's go:
I used to like this band a lot right before "See you on the other side", and I was hopping for this album to try and redeem KoRn. Too bad it didn't. As a matter of fact it just made things worse. Buying it after the "See you.." is like having your girlfrined cheat on you, giving her another chance and having her cheat on you again. That sl*t! The disc is a lot like a roller coaster... it is it's ups and downs, and once you get an "up" you go quickly down and wait reaaaaaaally slowly for there to be another "up". I would reccomend it only if you're a dye-hard fan, or if you're as dumb as me and pre-ordered.
Let's go song by song:
1.- Intro (1:59'): This is a weird "song", just a big load of weird noises for the first minute and half. Then the battery kicks in, but doesn't help that much. 1.5/5
2.- Starting Over (4:04'): This one kind of reminds me of "Alone I Break", but it's no that good. The bass and the guitar are ok. The lyrics are also not bad and almost at the end there's a piano-like sound which is a pretty cool touch. 3/5
3.- B**ch we got a problem (3:25'): The beginning really weirds me out but the song gets better and better as it goes forward. The bass really shines during the whole track and the chorus is not bad either. Theres a small guitar solo at the end, and it helps getting this one up. 3/5
4.-Evolution (3:39'): I think this was supposed to be the "IT" song on this album, and I gotta tell you, I'm not dissappointed. The song starts well and keeps up the good work until the end. The chorus is awsome, and the "Take a look around.." part is just cool. The guitar is also pretty nice. 4.5/5
5.-Hold On (3:07'): Uhmmm..... quite an average song really. Not anything particullarly good nor sucky 'bout this one. It just takes you by the hand and walks you to the next song. 2.5/5
6.- Kiss (4:11'): A nice balad with some void-like sounds and a piano during the entire song. This and good lyrics sung at the propper time make a pretty solid song, oh and the whispering in the end is the bee's knees (Sorry I couldn't help myself...). 4.5/5
7.- Do what they say (4:19'): I can't figure out for what kind of sound were they going in this one. The song gets boring and my finger itched a lot to press the forward button. The end is slower and a bit nicer but still doesn't make up for the crimes commited during this song, it could be the worst on the album.(Intro does not count) 2/5
8.- Ever be (4:50'): OH THE HUMANITY!!!! WTF IS GOING ON??!! Sorry for what I said before, this IS with no discussion the worst song by KoRn. Ever. Period. It feels like they weren't even going for a particular sound in this one, they just placed random sounds at random moments and prayed for t to go smoothly. WELL GOOD LUCK NEXT TIME!! These were the worst 20 minutes of my life... what? It only lasts 5? Sorry, it's just so god damm repetitive that it seems it won't end. 0.5/5
9.- Love and Luxury (3:02'): Ok, the intro gets my hopes up and.... hey! surprise! they're not crushed down! The chorus is nice and the lyrics ROCK! ok maybe not "ROCK!" but "rock". (Man this disc is really messing with my conseption of reallity...) Still it's nice and easy to be listened and understood. 4/5
10.- Inocent Bystander (3:30'): Why oh why don't they stop with this kind of stuff?? This song is dangerously close to "Ever Be". There's something about it that stops my ears from bleeding but it's still bad. 2/5
11.- Killing (3:38'): What happens when KoRn and Six feet under have a horrid one-night-stand??? You get Killing!! Jonathan really puts a lot of effort on making the death metal screams, too bad he didn't acomplish it. The guitar is also really disturbing. 2.5/5
12.- Hushabye (3:54'): Uhmm, it sounds like "Hotel California" at the beginning, whichis no necessarily a bad thing. Then it gets heavier, there's some whispering going on.... You get the feeling it could have been a lot better. "Why oh why hushabye???" 2.5/5
13.- I will protect you (5:31') Creepy Outro really, just like "Love and Luxury" it gets your hopes up in the beginning, but due to an unfurtunate turn of events you get let down more than when you discovered that it was no fairy but your parents changing your teeth for cash. And even more when you discover you won't be loosing any more teeth. My point beeing that is a weird song with a lot of random noises. 2.5/5
I was really hopping for them to go back to their roots and make no experiments that will ultimately fail and make them loose more hardcore fans, if any left. I mean, we've seen this before (St. Anger??? Anyone??), they should have known better. Anyways if you liked the previous album try this one out and buy it only if you like it after you've listened to it. If you didn't like the "see you..." well go read a book or something.

I disagree about the "hardcore" fans being driven away by this new album. This album seems to be liked much more than SYOTOS. If anything, it seems that the hardcore fans are the only ones who do dig it.This Message Edited On 08.03.07
| | | The 'hardcore' Korn fans are the only ones who can get past the name Korn, so naturally they're going to like it.
Its a great album.
Your review was terrible. Bands have to mature, usually when bands go back to their roots its a disaster, much like you stated, St. Anger. This is the usual maturation from the band. Its a wonderful album and you missed the point. This Message Edited On 08.03.07

Digging: Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer
| | | Well, I don't mean that's set in stone, but there's not really much inbetween for Korn.
Especially on this site.
| | | What 'ya gonna do....Anyway, what's your view on Untouchables tribestos? That was the album where they went kinda crap; had some good songs but had nothing on Issues IMO.

Actually that happened on the self-titled.

| | | Untouchables was the beginning of their downward skid; in my opinion. Untouchables was a good, emotional album, but they haven't made a decent album other than this album since.
| | | How would you rate it?... Although i only like 5 songs, i give it a 2.5/5.

I never understood my so many people think Issues is the very best of Korn. I like it ok, but I never thought it was as classic as a lot of other Korn fans do.

And another thing, Korn did go back to their roots. It was called Take A Look In The Mirror.

There are actually many people who think this is Korn's worst. Personally think it's solid as their previous albums, just a darker and muddier sound.

Maybe, but Jonathan Davis was again too obsessed with bright vocal arrangements. And there was a terrible 80's sound on the snare drum.
