I'm not familiar with Symphony's earlier work. I've found that once I hear what a band is doing with their sound presently, I find it hard to go back. I imagine the same is true in the other direction. Once you've gotten into a band's sound and they start "messing" with it, you just can't get into it as much. The former happened to me with Unearth (picked up In the Eyes of Fire, loved it, found The Oncoming Storm, thought it was good, great even, but couldn't get into it). The later happened to me with Godsmac and Korn. I was fans of them from the outset and generally liked their albums less and less as they went on cause they started messing with their sound. Well, actually, that applies mostly to Korn, Godsmack just seemed to have lost their umph, though IV was better than faceless.

Considering that, this is one of the most talent-filled, well constructed albums I've ever heard, I love every tack, but Domination and Walls of Babylon really blow me away.

You need to go back, back to The Odyssey.

Domination is life.

Definately chekc out their older material. Honestly, this is one of my least favorite albums of theirs. I used to love it when it first came out, but then I grew out of it a bit. V: The New Mythology Suite is their best, then The Divine Wings of Tragedy, then The Odyssey. Those three are definately better than this and well worth getting.

Word, I hear you. I like the heaviness though, which leads me to believe that I'll still like this one more than their earlier stuff. There are few bands that I think will end up being worth going into their past work for, but this definitely seems like one of them. Opeth is an example, I'm not even a huge fan (though I see why people like them so much, they have a very cool, very unique style) but I liked Ghost Reveries a lot more than Blackwater. I know, blasphemy, don't flame me!! lol

Okay, so I've delved into Symphony X's illustrious past and found...(dun dun dun!)

I like their new stuff (Paradise Lost) even more now. Respect for the Way of the Samurai (a.k.a old "style" they haven't changed THAT much I relaize) but seeing what they've done with Paradise, which to me, is minimilize their harmonics, and go heavy on the instruments almost constantly (except for the ballads of course) I can say they changed up a decent amount, got meaner, heavier, a little flashier (that can be good or bad, for me, it's good) but are still themselves, still very recognizably Symphony X. I now have enormous respect for this band in that they were able to go so hard without losing their touch, so to speak. I heard at least 2 tracks from each previous major offering (Of Sins and Shadows and Divine Wings from that CD, Fallen, Egypt, and Breath of Poseidon, you know where they are, and Inferno, Wicked, and The Odyssey (all 24 minutes and 7 seconds of it!!! lol). I realize that an album is meant to be heard track by track, from beginning to end, but from the first riff of Inferno, to the closing of the Odyssey (the first and last tracks I listened to respectively) I already knew where my heart lay. In Paradise.

btw, I love this freaking place, my taste and library for/of metal has tripled since coming here, but of course I waited till I had a semi-decent understanding of various genres and types and sounds, and purposes/goals (the overall sound a given band is going for) before I started posting to avoid sounding like a COMPLETE moron lol.

There's always variation (and the occasional biased jackass) but for the most part, the objectivity here (both in official reviews, and on the boards in general) is staggering

I'm LOVING this album right now! I might bump this up to a 4.5 soon.

The intro riff to Revelation is orgasmic. Such good harmonizing.

I'm listening to this non-stop. It's been on my mp3 player for ages now. I used it as my wake-up call as well. Waking up to the Oculus ex Inferni - Set the World on Fire transition is sexy.

The Divine Wings of Tragedy is better than those two albums you mentioned. Though both albums are pretty fucking massive.

The Odyssey bores me compared to this, outside of Accolade II, Awakenings, and The Turning. I put my ipod on shuffle in my car every morning on the way to school, The Sacrifice came on this morning. damn good song.

Seconding Odyssey = Boring.

This is actually my fav SymX CD (apparently it shouldn't be, but it most definitely is, hence the 5 rating ), followed by Divine Wings, then V.

The only 5's I've given out are Uneath's In the Eyes of Fire (another CD that doesn't REALLY deserve a "perfect" rating, but it's honestly just exactly what I love to hear) Tool's 10,000 Days and Aenima, and this joint, but Monnsorrow's newest is climbing it's way up there.

I like epicness in all it's forms lol. This Message Edited On 01.09.08

I would go with The Divine Wings and Paradise Lost. The Odyssey comes third and after there's V.

And on Odyssey all songs are really good. Inferno is the best Id say.

The riffing in Inferno is kind of cool, but in the end just bores me. Boring is a good phrase for that album, this is much more exciting and engaging.

Ill give The Odyssey another listen tomorrow and quote again...

That might be so, but I don't like ballads so much. ;x

Well I mean, I guess I do, but that's not what I listen to bands like this for.
