This was the first Dream Theatre album I could fully listen through.
Albeit that it was the first proper album I had listened to fully.
I like it quite a lot, which surprised me. Made me go and buy some of their older stuff.
Still not entirely sold on the vocals though.

I like this album. I like it a lot, actually, but it still just doesn't compare to the golden days of Dream Theater. I agree that it's a good mixture of old and new, but both old and new sound...tired somehow. As if I've heard it before. When I first heard Scenes From a Memory I was in shock at how bloody good it was, how original it sounded, and how enjoyable it was to listen to. I didn't get that with this at all. It's a good listen, I reccomend it to fans of progressive metal everywhere, but I'd not rank it in the same league as the top Dream Theater albums.
I enjoyed your review. Very well written, good job.

and those.
i'd count this on par with octavarium, but only just.

Yeah, I'd say that's pretty fair. I'm not really a big Octavarium fan, though, so I'm not sure what order I'd put them in if I was forced to.

this album could be so much better if DT didn't drag the second half out with 38 minute songs. Tracks 5-8 are so much weaker than the first 4.

nice review, been meaning to pick this one up

Dream Theater wore off me about a year ago when this album was released. I'm just not impressed by egos who play instruments anymore.

I haven't heard much Dream Theater, but I've heard bits and pieces of this album that were good. The only songs I've heard were the mediocre Constant Motion, and the annoying Forsaken. Does it get better from there?
From what you say, they sound like Opeth... hopefully without their 2-minute acoustic interludes in the middle of good songs.
|
| |
They are in almost NO way like Opeth, except that they have acoustic parts and have long songs.

they don't have misplaced acoustic parts tho

I got their last 3 cds all at once a few months ago it took a few listens to get used to but now i can put systematic chaos on and listen to every song til the last damn second, I know that DT is not everyones cup of tea but they are tremendous musicians and deserve a hell of a lot more then a 3.6 average rating.

I originally gave this a 4, until I closed my DT fanboy period of life and realized...well...they really need to write better songs. Period. My rating has been adjusted. It's an OK album, but nothing to write home about.

I don't really like Ministry Of Lost Souls that much, or Forsaken. But In the Presence of Enemies completely makes up for them!
