Well I don't really like the feel of those records, I guess. On this and long drive the band feels so much looser, and Brock's vocals are so much crazier, and that's what I want when I'm in the mood for this band. I also dig the sprawling feel of this compared to their major label stuff, which seems too condensed for a band like this.

In between the time I wrote that comment though and now, I really warmed up to The Moon and Antarctica, which I owned for years but never really got into much. Saw it as a more mature version of the type of band that made this

not a fan of their other major label stuff tho

I think that's my problem with this record, but I fell head over heels for Moon and Antarctica so that's just the form of Modest Mouse I'm in the mood for I suppose. The sprawl of this just seems a bit too indulgent at points, like "Lounge (Closing Time)" where a 4-minute song would greatly benefit the catchiest riff. Or rather, most of it just ends up sounding too similar or whacked out for an album that pushes well past the hour. In closing, I am a big fan of the maturation they went through but /personal choice considering Moon and Antarctica is just perfect for my life right now.

I forgot how amazing this album is...I think this might define what's great about modest mouse to me, and that would be frenetic, fucked up indie from a dude with a lisp

The review was great but the math was sketchy, you gave it a 91/100 (almost exactly a 4 out of 5) but rated it 4.5, and all of the ratings you gave it added up to 59 out of 75 (a 79/100). I know that's not the point, just saying... Yeah.

Anyway, this album took a while to grow on me but it's my favorite Modest Mouse album now, right ahead of The Moon and Antarctica.
