Between The Buried and Me are upbeat?
I must have them confused with someone else.

Maps & Atlases absolutely, I much prefer them but they also sort of unlocked this style of music for me, so I get Battles at lot more through M&A

Good point DFel, I completely forgot about Maps and Atlases and Tera Melos. (I haven't listened to any BTBAM to really have much of an opinion on that) I still think I enjoy Battles the most of those bands.

They're ridiculous and switch from melodic death to pop and progressive instantly. Their songs are all fast paced and even when they're intense, brutal, or grinding they're doing it in a circus-like way.

Maps & Atlases isn't anything like Battles.
And neither are any of those bands you listed.
Battles is just the shit.

Yeah....either I am thinking of some other band, or I just got really unlucky with what I heard. What I'm thinking of was pretty standard metalcore with some melodeath-y guitar work. Nothing you could ever label 'progressive'.
My best friend IRL won't shut up about Maps & Atlases recently. This Message Edited On 06.20.07

He didn't say those bands were the same as Battles, he was just telling me of other bands that are upbeat and technical.

Iai, just listen to the songs "Mordecai" and "Selkies." There's a lot of pop/prog in there.

the first four tracks slay and the rest of the album does not die much from there and pretty much keeps it's composure. this isn't getting old anytime soon.

Listened to "Atlas" today. Sounds like it would be cool if I was high, but man, it was really trippy. Don't know if I dig it yet.
