Maiden maybe... let me rephrase that actually
Can't think of a metal band whose singles are far and away their best tracks other then Pantera

Live in a hole and by demons be driven are on the second half and those rule.

Pantera were something special for sure, catchy but so much more abrasive than the other big names plus they defied the trend of mellowing /selling out. Such a shame i never got to see them n the flesh their concerts looked like madness

My mom saw hair metal Pantera live, and even then she still left the show with a shoe print on her face.

Yea these guys sort of started out as sellouts and then became awesome lol kind of a backwards trajectory
|
| |
yeah theyre an anomaly , in fact i can't think of any other band of their level of fame who grew more aggressive and less accessible over time. By the turn of the century darrell was leaving his guitar dropped and phils only vox were death growls/screams. Phil was definitely the catalyst and the one propelling them in the heavier direction.
Have you sussed his recent bm project scour?

Yes!

I've always viewed pantera's obsession with getting heavier as more of a gimmick than a genuine motivation, but I still like their music.

"who grew more aggressive and less accessible over time."
I mean they were basically the accidental answer to the death of Metallica, so by maintaining their metallasticity they actually made themselves more accessible.

Did Pantera really save metal???????????????

they didn't save it, they just got popular during a period of time when metal as a genre was suffering.....the bar was definitely lowered

Came at the right time and were workaholics, great band.. concerts.. best fans.. shows were an absolute blast.
Y'know hearing this on the radio back in the day, loved it. Singles asides no dips.. second half goes full blast.. hollow? phenomenal! Just a memorable album for me if I had to choose my choice cuts of the 90's.

"Did Pantera really save metal?"
Saving metal is an exaggeration but it's true that they kept thrash as a relevant genre through their groove style.

superrficially aka on the billboards perhaps but metal sure as fuck wasn't suffering during the early 90's - that was that saw the proliferation of shitloads of extreme subgenres (most of which have origins in the late 80's tbf)
Also Zacu i don't think playing heavy was some affectation i mean if they wanted to optimize their fame and fortune they'd keep pumping out tracks like hollow but releasing trendkill basically precluded them from getting air play besides suicide note part I im pretty sure, plus they were far heavier than what you're casual metallica fan would enjoy.
They also instrumental in getting a lot of big names on the radar - neurosis, deftones, eyehategod, crowbar, black metal amongst US fans
tl;dr phils the man
