There is NO way this gets a 2.5. All bias aside The lowest I could see it get is a 3.5, but a 2?! Hell, "Sour Flow" alone merits more than that. It's overall too good an album to recieve such low score. The songs are structured near perfectly. There is a melody to the songs, yet they're also brutal and heavy when needed...but whatever.

Still baffles me as to why people like shit like this and yet, will still laugh at all the other bands that play this exact style. Worst part about these guys: awkward use of pinch harmonics scattered throughout each song about 1000 times.

At least Necrophagist can write songs as opposed to wank/ pinch harmonic/ pointless arpeggio/ wank some more : P.

difference is that spawn is baroque classical and bands that "copy them" (which sound nothing like them to me, probably because i have actual ears) take their riffs and change a few notes while implementing none of their godlike baroque song structuring

I don't get it, Necrophagist do it tastefully.

necrophagist, while i like their first album, rely on extremely basic structuring, with only a few riffs per song (repeated over and over) and conveniently placed solos. whereas spawn present a neverending, and constantly evolving, stream of "riffs" (except on dead & grotesque which was written long before all the others), and solos that are actually innovative and different (rip karlsson). saying that necrophagist is more tasteful is just asinine, and if you're going to use technicality to claim that spawn is bad, why don't you just also go ahead and say that Bach sucks, as he is more technical than spawn will ever be and is also the biggest influence for this album. don't take this to mean that i think spawn accurately transitioned bach's exact style to death metal.

I'm not going to sit here and claim I know classical composition as well as you do, but even if they are imitating this influence through technical death metal, I just find it absolutely boring. Classical music has such a rich sound to it while most forms of tech death are just too monotonous to really show off anything actually melodious. This band fails at that and that's why I'm going to say that even if they are trying to mimic this particular style of classical music, it sounds like absolute garbage to these ears.

As for Necrophagist, the reason I say they are more tasteful is because they "don't" cram a million riffs into one song. That stream of riffs you mention above does not constitute actual song writing, but rather a dull string of one riff after the other leading to nowhere.

Curse.

more riffs constitutes more musical aptitude. most people can write 2 riffs and repeat them over and over again and call it a song; not everyone can string together so many riffs (while barely ever repeating them for longer than a few seconds) and make it sound so coherent, and make every riff sound fresh. thank you for giving testament to why spawn is so much better than the others. to go back to bach and classical music, since we are discussing music in such broad and generalized terms, he rarely ever repeated the same thing in many of his works, yet this is exactly why he is praised and serves as a testament to the genius he possessed. as a listener, i also find it more rewarding when i get more riffs per song, it makes the music more challenging to "understand" and therefore better by my criteria. 2-3 riffs per song is too easy to digest and gives no longevity; hence why I get bored of bands like necrophagist after a couple months and never feel as if i need to listen to them again, whereas i listen to noctambulant 50-100 times per year and it still feels fresh.

It's how the riffs are put together that form the "memorable" song in my mind, but if you like going through guitar exercises in your head than that's fine too. I can see where you're coming from and I guess it just comes to a crossroads where either more-means-better or the fact you find other outlets in music that are as challenging and also just as rewarding. It's simply taste in music and I guess this stuff isn't my thing. Please tell me you at least enjoy really good songwriters/ tech death metallers such as Gorod?

i enjoy them but not near as much as i enjoy spawn. i dont like overt melody or groove that is so obviously focused on hooks. hooks don't last. for me stuff that isn't memorable is the stuff that truly has substance. hence why i enjoy bands like disgorge/deeds/defeated sanity so much more, where you actually find new things every time you listen. if something has the ability to get stuck in my head, it has the ability to completely bore me over time. gorod's newest album was terrible though. first two are better albums in the category that i call 'pop death metal,' still too many hooks to be a favorite band of mine ever, even though i was an original loud supporter of them in my naive days

ps. if u hate the "wank," how do you feel about Sour Flow? there is nothing ostentatiously "wanky" about it aside from one of the solos, even though its still technical as fuck (and the best song on the album for what its worth)

i dont like these guys as much as anthracks obviously, but everything he is saying is pretty much spot on when it comes to the classical influence. i have yet to hear a band do it better than spawn.

and with necrophagist, if you take away the solos the songs are pretty much dribble.

This album is awesome to listen to when doing homework because it's not distracting but the technical rythms make your brain happy.
