I think Portnoy was the primary reason for the band trying so hard to sound extra heavy and edgy.

idk they made octavarium

Octavarium is shite though

They also made average albums like sc, bcsl. I guess they don't have the ability to write anything refreshing anymore.

seems like they're heading down the same road as Yes did

For me all the albums with contributions by Portnoy sound fresh, the downward trend began after his departure for me.

Finally Free has to be my favorite DT song. It creates that "epic" atmosphere they always looked for without falling into wankery, plus it isn't that heavy

Seriously am I the only one who thinks Finally Free is a stinker?

Can't see how it could stink tbh

I've talked about it before, in concept it works suitable but musically gahhhh. Everything from the tacky session with the samples of screaming and the gunshots to Labrie's delievery I just want to tune out.

The samples are kinda silly, I agree with that but LaBrie's is quite decent on it (for LaBrie's standards). Instrumentally speaking it rules, perfect drumming and the two "riffing" sections are awesome, quite epic for me

Fair enough, if it worked on a conceptual level I really wish it ended on The Spirit Carries On because that's my favourite on the album.

Yeah I like the ending of Finally Free which contains some of the best chops by Portnoy.
