2 of 5 thought this review was well written
So far what i have heard as a rush fan are mostly compilations. ( greatest hits, rush in rio). Other than that, all i had heard was moving pictures. SO i decided to grab another rush album and i decided on this one.
Fly by Night was Rush' 2nd album. It was also their first realease with Neil Peart on drums who is in my opinion one of the greatest drummers ever. This is a great album which i would recommend to any rush fan or proggesive/classic rock fan.
lineup/description:
-Geddy lee-vocals and bass
Geddy lee is an amazing bassist ,and his playing is very prominent in most songs. He sings with his trademark high pitched scream which might take some getting used to
-alex lifeson- electric guitars, six and twelve string acoustic guitars.
alex is a great guitarist, and he plays some awesome riffs on this album. He also shows some exceptional soloing skill
-Neil Peart- drums/percussion
I think that Peart is the greatest drummer of all time. He compliments geddy and alex perfectly
Track by track review:
Anthem(4:22) - This is an incredible opening song to the album. IT starts with a few great guitar riffs, and then Geddy's high pitched screeching voice comes in. Crazy guitar solo about halfway in that lasts for about 30 seconds and then the vocals kick back in. This is one of the best songs on the album. 5/5
Best i can(3:25) - This is a pretty good song, with excellent drumming by neil. For some reason, this really doesnt sound like something rush would play. Not to say it isnt good though, it just reminds me of another song that i just cant place my finger on... Aside from that, good song 4/5
Beneath, Between and Behind(3:02) - Starts off with guitar playing some chords that sound like they came straight from an ACDC song. Then the rest of the band comes in an you are reminded that rush is alot more talented than acdc. Pretty good song, but for rush standards its not amazing 3.5
By-tor and the Snow Dog(8:37) - This is the longest song on the album and it tells a story. There are for parts to this song: At the Tobes of Hades/ Across the Styx/ Of the Battle/ Epilogue. It tells of the battle between two characters named By-tor and the snowdog. This has Nice instumental sections and is very interesting to listen to and try to pick up the story. 5/5
Fy By night(3:21)- This is probably the most famous song off of the album. It is a very catchy and somewhat laid back song. Alex's guitar playing fits the song perfectly, and Geddys vocal performance is one of my favorites out of all the rush songs i have heard. The drums are great too, and there is a nice guitar solo towards the end. 5/5
Making Memories(2:58)- This is pretty unique for Rush, starting off with folkish sounding acoustic guitar. This is a good song, but i dont think the electric guitar solo in the middle works well with this song.... 4/5
Rivendell(4:57) - wow... This song is interesting, particularly becasue all of the lyrics(not to mention the title) are about Lord of the Rings. heres an excerpt," You feel there's something calling you You're wanting to return To where the misty mountains rise and friendly fires burn A place you can escape the world Where the dark lord cannot go Peace of mind and sanctuary by loud water's flow". This song is all acoustic guitar and vocals, and is quite unique and relaxing. 4.5/5
In the End(6:47) - I really like the acoustic intro to this song. It goes on for about 2 minutes with some vocals, and then stops. A few seconds later, the electric guitar comes in with the band. This is a great closer to a great album. 5/5
Ok Time to average up my ratings..... drumroll..... 4.5
This is a great album with some memorable riffs and vocals. I Definately reccomend it
Best songs: Anthem
Fly by night
By-tor and the snow dog

I enjoy this album for an occasional listen.
| | | Can anyone recommened another good rush album to me?
| | | get 2112
| | | If you like more progressive music, than, as Galapogos said, you should get 2112. That's my favorite Rush album, by far. Moving Pictures is pretty good, too. It's a little more streamlined than previous Rush albums, but it has some really good stuff on it. By the way, very good review.
| | | You should definately pick this up empty hearted. Rush are awesome musicians
| | | how could rivendell be based around lord of the rings? i mean i know what ur saying but this was released in 1975, lord of the rings like 2000 or somthing. I might be misundertood, but the way you worded it to me sounded like rush copiedThis Message Edited On 01.23.06
| | | Actually....The Lord of The Rings was first published in 1954. It was written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It's a great read. I recommend it!This Message Edited On 01.31.06
| | | The title track is good, and so is the rest of the album. Very different sounding from their debut. They obviously improved when Neil joined, not only on drums but in lyrics too.
Digging: Wilco - Being There
| | | Yeah, Neil is a great lyricist. Anthem's a great track. It's made me love Rush again. I think this will be my next Rush album.
I was just watching a video of them playing from around this time and Neil looked like Trevor from Trailor Park Boys. This Message Edited On 02.19.07
